Sustainability on board

The initiatives of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

We need to drastically change the aviation industry to make flying more sustainable. KLM is constantly working on this. Small changes contribute to achieving this goal. One of these changes is the reorganisation of the in-flight experience:

Weight reduction

The lighter an aircraft is, the less fuel it consumes—and that means lower CO₂ emissions. KLM reduces emissions by cutting weight wherever possible, including lighter seats, trolleys, and other onboard equipment.

On selected routes, passengers can pre-order their meals. This helps reduce onboard weight, which in turn lowers fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. It also significantly reduces the amount of food that needs to be thrown away after a flight.

More conscious choice of meals on board

Every year, we serve around 40 million meals on board our flights. We try to take the environmental impact into account when selecting our meals.

Recycling

By 2030, we aim to generate 50% less residual waste compared to 2011. Most of our waste is produced on board our flights. Three key recycling initiatives contribute most to reducing this waste:

  • Separating 14 different waste streams, allowing around 300 tons of plastic to be recycled each year
  • Recycling coffee grounds, which are turned into biogas and compost
  • Reuse: Didn’t feel like eating your snack on a European flight? Thanks to extended shelf life, we can use it on another flight

What our passengers can do

As an airline, it’s our responsibility to help make aviation more sustainable. But there are small steps you can take, too, to help reduce CO₂ emissions and onboard waste:

  • Pack light
  • Bring your own reusable water bottle
  • Use a digital boarding pass
  • Pre-order a vegan or vegetarian meal at least 24 hours before departure
  • If you’re traveling in Business Class, select your preferred meal at least 24 hours before departure
